EPTDA Informs
The ABC of EPTDA's EU monitoring

Are you proud of your products, people and services - they are polished to perfection thanks to the countless hours you have devoted to develop them. You know you need to be wordclass to survive in these days. But in an ever-changing borderless business environment even perfect products are not enough. You must also look and think outside the box. What is happening in the surrounding society and in the global economy?

European Union & your business
The European integration is business reality. Today the European Union is a source of approximately 70-80 % of the legislation that governs our everyday life and business practices. There are currently more than 2,500 EU directives and regulations, covering everything from waste disposal to working time, from parental leave to intellectual property rights. Thus changes in EU legislation might have direct impact in your company’s bottom line. It truly pays off to be proactive and monitor your interest.

At the same time the power transmission sector is one of the few industries of this size that still doesn’t have an EU affairs monitoring and representation in place. No one is looking after our interests, leaving PT/MC companies exposed to any future legislative risks that can affect the competitiveness and profitability of the sector. EPTDA’s member companies are vulnerable to change in many policy areas such as environment, energy, and trade and consumer protection. New regulation or alteration of an existing one might ban a certain type of production or a mode of transport or rule that a by-product can no longer be reused and resold but instead it needs to be defined as waste. Examples are countless. EU’s intentions are good - the principle is to boost European competitiveness, but the "red-tapists in Brussels" cannot know the industry realities. No sector can afford to have a blind spot for European policies.

EPTDA’s EU watchdog
This is why EPTDA has - based on EPTDA’s leaders decision this spring - taken the first steps in EU monitoring. EPTDA members will get tailored inside information in an efficient and economical way. This pro-active approach is a real value-adder, as members are regularly informed on the issues relevant to their business. Members have already received the first three monitoring reports and more will follow. The reports are also available on the EPTDA website. In addition, the EPTDA pages in Power in Motion will from now on feature a regular page dedicated to topical EU matters.

EU, Energy Efficiency and EPTDA - Europe’s three big E’s
Energy has always been a hot issue for business but in the recent years it has become a truly burning topic. Energy is the biggest global challenge of our time. Europe is dependent on energy imports 50% and the figure will rise to 70% by 2050. The direct cost of our inability to use energy efficiently amounts to more than 100 billion Euros annually by 2020. These figures are not sustainable economically or geopolitically. We need action, not talk only. In other words; we need to become more energy efficient for real. Every company and every citizen has a role to play - also EPTDA. For PT/MC industry, the overall potential is estimated to be around 25%. Equipment such as motors, fans and lighting offer the most important savings potential.
